Sir, – With empty buildings on every corner Siptu still wants to get into the property development game. Joe O’Flynn of Siptu (August 6th) tells us that the reason is not because Liberty Hall is dangerous or cannot be refurbished but because Siptu would prefer a building with a different layout and a skydeck. Throw in a few empty floors for good measure.
The developers’ jargon of “fit for purpose”, construction jobs, enhancing tourism, etc, are put forward to justify a grandiose scheme and demolishing an iconic structure. We have heard it all before. What Mr O’Flynn is really saying is while everyone else should change, the old rules apply to Siptu.
Clearly despite Siptu’s “rich history and connection with the local community” those leading it are incapable of imagining a different future for Ireland and are no different from those who got us into this mess. – Yours, etc,
