The Hillery Presidency

Sir, - Your coverage of the presidential election on the Internet was superb

Sir, - Your coverage of the presidential election on the Internet was superb. For those of us living abroad and anxious to keep abreast of domestic politics, this on-line service has become an indispensable part of our day. In this recent campaign and in the General Election last June, your detailed analysis of the issues and campaigns was compelling. The chance to sound off on different topics and the great results service almost made up for not being able to vote.

Drapier makes an important point (The Irish Times, November 1st) when he advises our President-elect to consult Patrick Hillery. I know it is fashionable to rubbish the pre-Robinson presidency and that we all should admire Mrs Robinson's historic achievements and legacy. However, it should not be forgotten that Dr Hillery restored dignity to the office after the Donegan debacle, resisted the crude attempts to subvert his constitutional functions in 1982 and was a dedicated and skilled ambassador for the country both before and during his Presidency. I had the good fortune to meet him and Mrs Hillery several times when they were in the Áras and their graciousness and style were both impressive and memorable. - Yours, etc.,
