Sir, - Is it not extraordinary that neither unionists nor nationalists in the North of Ireland appear able to perceive the opportunity which the issue of marching affords them?

Nothing would better demonstrate their genuine determination, if such there be, to reach out to the other persuasion and resolve their differences, than voluntarily to forgo their right to march, rather than aggressively insisting on exercising that right. What a dramatic difference it would make to the situation if such an inflammatory issue should voluntarily be excised from the province. A major point of confrontation would be removed at a stroke, and undeniable good will be apparent to all.

The parties have already swallowed more bitter pills, particularly early prisoner release. Can one hope that the necessary generosity of spirit can be found to lead them to take such a substantive and imaginative step towards reconciliation? - Yours, etc.,
