THE OBVIOUS COALITION

Sir, - Are our political commentators blind? We are hearing talk of a Fianna Fail/PD/Independent alliances. We are astonishingly also hearing talk of a Fianna Fail/Labour alliance. Can anyone explain to me why it would seem that the people of Ireland are once again being ignored?

The largest section of the Irish electorate wants Fianna Fail in government. The next largest section of the Irish electorate wants Fine Gael in government. The conclusion which I draw from this is that the most obvious coalition partners are Fianna Fail and Fine Gael in that this would give representation to the largest section of the electorate.

For how long are we going to allow the Civil War and the signing of the Treaty to weigh down on Irish life by being dragged like a ball and chain through Dail Eireann?

A Fianna Fail/Fine Gael government might prove to be extremely effective in that both parties to the coalition would keep a close eye on each other. It would also give us the largest pool of experienced ministers from which to choose a government. How can we ever hope for peace on this island of ours when our two largest parties cannot resolve their own slight and largely historical differences?
