Madam, - In your edition of November 27th, Dr Garret FitzGerald wrote about the lack of a middle ground on the issue of abortion. He prefaced his remarks by stating his unease that his article would almost certainly "offend" both sides.

As we enter the final months of this year might it be possible to request an early New Year's resolution from your letters page? Can we please have a ban on all letters containing the "O" word? Whatever happened to good old-fashioned agreeing and disagreeing, up to and including "completely" and "totally".

Nowadays, people can choose between being "quite" offended, all the way up to "utterly" offended. Once the appropriate level of offence is registered, there is no further requirement to rebut an argument through such old-fashioned methods as reason, logic, facts or humour. - Yours, etc.,
