Sir, - I have been moved to write after reading and listening to the Presidential election coverage of the past seven days, particularly the shameful treatment being dished out to Mary McAleese. The daily attacks and snide remarks from practically all sections of the Dublin media as well as opposition spokespersons would remind one of the anti-Communist witchhunt in 1950s America.

It seems that the attitude prevailing in the Dublin media is one where Northern nationalists are expected to keep their heads down for fear of upsetting unionists. Mary Banotti's comments about Fianna Fail having to go to Belfast for a presidential candidate are not only downright insulting to those of us from the minority tradition in the Six Counties, but indeed are a reflection of what many people up here see as the true Fine Gael position on the North. Who could possibly forget John Bruton's now memorable description of the peace process?

The demonising of Mary McAleese is only the latest in a long line of attacks by the Dublin media and Fine Gael on Northern nationalists and unfortunately will not be the last. If elected, Mary McAleese will serve as a shining ambassador for all the people of Ireland, both at home and abroad. - Yours, etc.,

From S. Dolan
