Madam, – The photograph of Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin (by Eric Luke, April 18th) shows him standing in front of the beautifully carved lettering of the Irish version of the Proclamation of the Republic at Arbour Hill. This major work was done by Michael Biggs, one of Ireland’s outstanding sculptors and calligraphers. It was carved, in all weathers, between 1959 and 1963. Sadly he never signed his work and today Michael Biggs’s authorship is largely forgotten.
Is it time to add a plaque honouring his name as the artist of this work, which is one of Dublin’s treasures? – Yours, etc,
