Madam, - It seems that some heads and former heads of Irish universities, such as Dr Ed Walsh (Education Today, January 16th) and his cossetted colleagues, secure from the vagaries of the market economy, are all too willing to lecture us that their remuneration is not competitive, and that they should be treated like CEOs.
One wonders if the same people would be equally quick to put the issue to an annual stakeholder vote and ask students to recommend a benefits package based on managerial performance and commitment.
I suspect most students would send them packing with considerably less than they already earn.
