Trade unions and Eighth Amendment

Sir, – I am old enough to remember the anti-apartheid campaigns of the 1960s and 1970s organised by the Irish trade union movement. I was and am in complete support of trade unions espousing these human rights issues; it is in keeping with their ethos.

I am disappointed in the extreme, however, to witness official trade union support for abolition of the Eighth Amendment. Surely the fundamental issue is that two vulnerable human beings, not one, are at risk in every situation where abortion is contemplated.

I humbly suggest that the Irish Congress of Trade Unions has lost the plot on this issue. – Yours, etc,

JIM STACK,
