A chara, - As one of the many thousands of suffering commuters alluded to by Frank McDonald (The Irish Times, January 5th), I welcome his analysis of the increasingly frustrating delays in travelling to and from work. However, laying the blame solely at the door of increased car ownership coupled with Government inaction is a mite facile. Many of the new car owners were only too glad to when increasing affluence allowed them to buy a car of their own. This is not to do with selfishness or lack of concern for the common good, but rather the extremely poor quality of public transport, especially buses. This has little to do with quality bus corridors or the provision of light rail. There are not enough routes provided and the hygiene, comfort and space on the buses is unacceptable. In particular, there is great discomfort for those over 5ft 5ins in height, as Dublin Bus tries to cram in more and more people.
