Sir, – Your article on the chaos caused by a group of Irish Travellers in Germany demonstrates how a German mayor is allowed to speak frankly about a problem, and the Irish media, including your venerable newspaper, have no difficulty in reporting it ("Group of Irish Travellers accused of causing chaos at German town", August 20th).
But we in Ireland are not afforded the same freedom of speech, and we are not quoted by the media when large groups of people temporarily invade an Irish locality, cause chaos and then depart leaving a mess that has to be cleaned up by local officials and volunteers.
Isn’t it time Irish public officials and Irish people generally were allowed the same freedom of speech as their German counterparts? – Yours, etc,
