Trials Of Rail Travel

Sir, - On Sunday last (November 9th) my wife and I travelled to Cork by train. The journey from Dublin was pleasant and we arrived in Cork more or less on time.

By contrast, the return journey was something of a nightmare. The 4.30 p.m. service from Cork was provided by an Arrow train. For such a long journey (almost three hours) the seats were uncomfortable and the heating was hopelessly inadequate. Also, the train at times seemed to be lurching and swaying rather dangerously. To add to our discomfort there was no catering of any kind. The only toilet on the last two carriages of the train was locked and those two carriages were cut off from the rest of the train by a door which was also locked.

On arrival in Heuston Station I found that it now costs 20 pence to spend a penny there and that each of the five ticket machines rejected my car-park ticket several times before one of them eventually accepted it. When I got to the car park I discovered that I need not have paid at all as the exit barrier was up. What a shambles. - Yours, etc.,
