Madam, - On April 3rd, Ecuador ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, becoming the 20th government to do so and thereby triggering the treaty's entry into force. In 30 days from that date the convention will be binding international law for all states that have ratified it, demonstrating their strong commitment to the principles of non-discrimination, inclusion and equal opportunities for all people in society.
Perhaps the new Taoiseach will ensure that Ireland, which played a positive part in the development of the convention, shows a similar commitment by ratifying it without further delay. - Yours, etc,
Dr ARTHUR O'REILLY, North Avenue, Mount Merrion, Co Dublin.
