Madam, - "Media is a plural - there is really no excuse for treating it otherwise," says Bill Bryson in the latest edition of his Troublesome Words. However, you have decided otherwise, and we must make the best of it.
If I understand your decision correctly, the word can still be plural, as in "the various media react differently in a crisis", but it will usually be singular, as in "The media is unanimous in deploring Guantanamo".
How is your staff going to cope with such subtleties when some of it can't even distinguish between "who" and "whom"? - Yours, etc,
MICHAEL DRURY, Avenue Louise, Brussels.
