Sir, - Is a horse that wins a Derby by a short head inferior to one who wins by two lengths?
George Bush won the election, admittedly in questionable circumstances. These circumstances arose through a cock-up in the electoral system, not through any fault of either candidate. Regardless of who was eventually elected, he deserves, and should get, the support of the nation. Sniping at Bush is most unfair and I sincerely hope he will fulfil his office with the success and dignity that it requires.
Remember, when Truman had to come in to fill the office he was greeted as a potential disaster. He proved to be a great president. - Yours, etc.,
George H. Briscoe, Craystown House, Bective, Navan, Co Meath.
