Sir, – The German sense of humour is often itself the basis of jokes, as the country’s reputation for accuracy, efficiency and organisational excellence don’t exactly suggest light heartedness. Their plan to clarify on April 1st that a press release of March 30th stating they would rename themselves Voltswagen was an April Fool’s prank probably confirms both stereotypes (News, March 30th). One might think it’s an embarrassing failure of comic timing, but arguably they delivered the product two days before the deadline. – Yours, etc,
