Sir, - John Waters in his column on November 5th claimed that non emigrants were guilty of ". . . complicity in a process of cultural culling which allows the State and society to function in their present ineffective and absurd fashion, unquestioning of the in built means by which mediocrity and delusion are perpetuated."

Has John Waters emigrated or is he actually confessing to mediocrity and delusion? Or is his article simply more hot air to power the John Waters balloon far beyond the (distant) shores of credibility? Who else but John Waters is capable (apart from coining uniquely ugly phrases like "cultural culling") of describing in all seriousness as "absurd" the functioning of State and society while a couple of paragraphs later suggesting that emigrants be given a greater say in the running of the State than non emigrants?! How many votes each should they get? Two, maybe three? Unfortunately I am not qualified to judge as I have not emigrated yet.

Yours, etc.,
