Madam, - Yes, Dunphy can get a bit stroppy and over the top but it's entertaining and provocative and anyway Uncle Gilesy is there to keep everyone's toe in the paddling pool of reality. Souness has been a great addition to the panel and it's not all grumpy whinging about the competition.
They have nothing but praise and a sense of joy for the teams and players that have really deserved it. Glowing reviews so far to Argentina, Spain, Italy, Ghana and to a host of players who are playing with the commitment and intelligence that we expect at a world cup.
It is not sour grapes to dole out harsh but informed criticism to those who deserve it. Also there is a real sense of humour on RTÉ as opposed to the terribly forced jolly inanities that BBC and ITV go in for. And the RTÉ coverage has the trump card in Uncle Bill.
Support the home team. Not because it's Irish but because it's simply the best. - Yours, etc,
EUGENE O'BRIEN, Upper Clanbrassil Street, Dublin 8.
