A Chara, - We must thank Fintan O'Toole (Opinion, January 10th) for exposing the myth that welfare cuts help the poor get back to work. He is right to applaud the influence of trade unions and leftwing parties in recent governments for the tentative but sincere steps being taken in Ireland to reach a real solution to this problem.
I would be a lot happier with his comments had he included in his list the Conference of Religious in Ireland (CORI) for its radical proposals on a basic incomes policy. Let us give credit where credit is long overdue. - Yours, etc.,
