Sir, – I went to see the admirable and well-staged “Witness History” exhibition at the GPO in Dublin today.
It was well-attended by young and old. It occurred to me that present generations could never fully understand the compelling urge to overcome foreign control and gain self-determination that inspired the leaders of 1916 to action.
But then I walked out into the light of O’Connell Street and noted through the raised arms of Jim Larkin’s statue, the dead facade of that iconic department store that was Clery’s. I wandered down Henry Street amongst the mostly multinationally-owned shops.
I remembered then that I must go and pay my monthly mortgage instalment to the unregulated foreign vulture fund which bought the debt off my own government through the liquidation of IBRC.
I feel I understand a little of the fire that must have coursed through the veins of the seven signatories. – Yours, etc,
LOUISE M LYNCH
