Sir, – So Bertie Ahern is having problems paying his legal bills (Home News, September 1st, quoting a TV3 interview). Maybe he could get another dig-out? – Yours, etc,

LUKE CAHILL,

Stillorgan Road,

Dublin 18.

Sir, – Bertie Ahern said his presidential prospects were “snookered” by the decline in popularity of Fianna Fáil (Home News, August 29th, quoting interview with DCUfm). Not one mention by him of the fact that the 14 years of his toxic leadership, which has brought Ireland to the brink of economic and social ruin, is the precise and only reason why Fianna Fáil has “seen a decline in its popularity”. Mr Ahern’s denial knows no bounds.

Also in Home News we read that since stepping down as taoiseach, Mr Ahern has claimed expenses of “just over €264,000“; prompting a review of the expenses entitlements of former taoisigh. The man’s brass neck matches his denial.

I strongly urge him to run for the presidency as an independent candidate. This will give me and all my fellow citizens an opportunity to show him our regard for him. – Yours, etc,

VINCENT Mac CARTHY,
