Sir, – Ireland should not join the United Kingdom in seeking to host the 2030 Fifa World Cup ("Ireland and UK in joint bid to host 2030 Fifa World Cup", News, February 2nd). In addition to the fact that World Cups do not generally come close to providing the return on investment initially calculated by a bidder, the Irish Government should not be seen to be supporting a UK government that has just engaged in a very destructive Brexit, significantly harming Ireland, and which is effectively trying to "sportswash" its way back to the top table in international relations. – Yours, etc,
