Writing letters

Sir, – I have threatened to write many more letters to the editor than have ever been committed to the word processor. And for those that I have written, my “strike rate” has been abysmal; just a handful have ever been published.

Usually the letters I write are composed over breakfast and are prompted by something on the morning radio news programme that has exercised me negatively and is likely to gnaw at my mind for much of the day. But once the letter is written and the “Send” button is hit, it is as if those negative feelings have been deleted and I can again adopt a positive attitude to the challenges of the day.

For me, the letter to the editor, whether published or not, is pure catharsis. – Yours, etc,

JOSEPH DOYLE,
