Nine main killing grounds are identified in the indictment against Mr Milosevic and his co-accused. All but the killings at Rakac took place between January and May 1999, during the ethnic cleansing programme against Kosovan Albanians.
The incidents are:
1. Racak
After security forces pushed back rebel forces, 45 villagers, 44 of them men, were rounded up and executed on a hillside. This killing led to the failed Rambouillet peace talks which in turn led to NATO's bombing ultimatum and, when this was ignored, to war.
2. Dakovica
Twenty people were killed, and 300 men rounded up disappeared. Some are believed to be among the bodies found recently in the Danube.
3. Suva Reka
Known as the Coffee Shop Killing, in which 34 civilians were herded into a cafe and machine-gunned.
4. Bela Crkva
Civilians were herded into stream bed and machine-gunned. Twelve killed, 11 of them women or children.
5. Velika Krusa
One hundred and five men and boys were herded into a house and machine-gunned. Straw was put on the bodies and set alight.
6. Srbica
Two groups of men were separated from women and children. One group was taken to a hill, another to a river and machine-gunned. One hundred and thirty people died.
7. Kacanik
One hundred people died in a series of ethnic cleansing operations in local villages.
8. Istok
Inmates of Istok prison were herded into an exercise yard where guards with machine-guns opened fire from a watchtower. An unknown number, probably under 100, were killed.
9. Vucitrn
Ethnic cleansing of the town killed 104, and some people were beaten to death.
