Sir, - What a great pity that during the festive season, with projects costing millions of pounds planned or in hand in Dublin, no-one could find a little money to maintain one of the city's existing monuments.
It is disappointing that, apart from the seemingly unavoidable graffiti defacing its base, the Papal Cross in the Phoenix Park should be allowed to rust away, with peeling paint in full public view. It does not bode well for other monuments that may be erected in Dublin. - Yours, etc.,
Patrick O'Sullivan, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9.
