Sir, - It was with equal measures of amusement and umbrage that I read Robert O'Byrne's tongue-in-cheek lashing of Dublin pedestrians (An Irishman's Diary, September 18th). As a frequent visitor to your compact yet charming city, I have always treasured the hours spent wandering the quaint streets of Dublin. And while there may be a few of us who stroll leisurely with maps and cameras, run in chattering packs, or stop to chat to a friend, it sure beats the heads-down, barge-your-way-through-the-crowd pedestrian mentality of New York. I suggest that Mr O'Byrne, if he was at all serious in his diatribe, stop being so cranky. Perhaps he needs a new pair of walking shoes. . - Yours, etc.,.
