Former US president Donald Trump is expected to surrender to authorities in New York City next week and be brought before a judge after being indicted by a grand jury.

The move comes after an investigation into a $130,000 (€119,245) “hush money” payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

The payment was made just before the 2016 presidential election, and the events of that chaotic period are key to understanding how Donald Trump has become the first American president to face criminal charges.

Washington Correspondent Martin Wall explains the story to Aideen Finnegan on the In the News podcast.
