It may be a pub quiz question for future generations of politics nerds – what husband and wife TDs were replaced by a different husband and wife team in the same two constituencies?

Brophy (58) will be joined in Dáil Éireann by his wife Maeve O’Connell who has been elected in Dublin Rathdown. The couple live in Kilmacud.

Coincidentally the two constituencies were represented by Francis Noel Duffy and Catherine Martin respectively who both lost their seats.

Brophy is originally from Cabinteely, Co Dublin and was educated at Cabinteely Community College before studying Business at Rathmines College of Commerce (now part of the Technical University of Dublin).

Brophy served as a Fine Gael councillor in South Dublin County Council from 2008 to 2016. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann in 2016.

He was appointed as Minister of State for Overseas Development in July 2020, but lost that portfolio in the December 2022 reshuffle.

In the last two years he has concentrated on local issues and has prioritised a Metro South West service for his area and an enhanced Bus Connects service.
