After three days and 20 counts, all five seats in the Louth constituency were filled on Monday evening.

Sinn Féin incumbent Ruairí Ó Murchú was the first to be elected on day two of the count, alongside his party colleague Joanna Byrne, who had been on the local council since 2016.

The party has had a seat here since 2002 and two since 2016.

Incumbent Labour TD Ged Nash retained his seat and was elected after reaching quota on the 20th count. Fine Gael’s Paula Butterly was elected without reaching the quota of 10,623 votes in the 20th count. She received 9,062 votes.

Her running mate John McGahon was eliminated after the 18th count. He received 4,587 votes but his campaign was damaged due a fight he was involved in in 2018, which led to a €39,000 damages finding against him.

Fianna Fáil regained the seat they had held since 1927 – but lost in 2020, with Cooley-based senator Erin McGreehan, who was elected on Monday without reaching the quota. She received 8,629 votes. Her fellow running mate, Drogheda-born journalist Alison Comyn, lost out on the final count.
