Almost 350 industry heavyweights came together for the seventh annual Facilities Management Awards, which took place on January 30th at Ballsbridge Hotel, Dublin. Which is very much a reflection of the growth that the Irish economy continues to enjoy, notwithstanding the spectre of Brexit.
Facilities management is one of those things that a lot of people take for granted. But any building that is used by more than a handful of people will need some sort of management structure in place. Whether it be an airport, an office block or an apartment complex. And these awards were set up to acknowledge all the hard work that is being done in this expanding sector.
There were dozens of winners in the sixteen categories, one of which was An Post, who came away with two trophies. They won the Award for Excellence in Sustainability, and the Award of Overall Excellence in Facilities Management.
“We’re absolutely thrilled, and to have won in two categories on the night was really amazing. It is a huge operation at An Post, and these awards are recognition for all the hard work that everyone puts in across the organisation,” said John Smith, An Post facilities manager.
Trackplan, a computer-aided facilities management (CAFM) software company based in Limerick, won the award for Innovation in Technology and Systems – Providers. “We’re really pleased to have won one of these awards. One of the most difficult things when you’re a start-up is just getting out there and making a name for yourself. So winning one of these prestigious awards is a great way for us to establish our reputation,” said Mark Cochrane, Trackplan chief executive and founder.
BAM Facilities Management took home the award for Excellence in Health and Safety. “These awards are a highlight in the FM calendar as they celebrate the achievements of the FM community. We are delighted to win the Excellence in Health and Safety Award in recognition of our commitment to ensuring a safe and healthy working environment,” said Gráinne de Mórdha, general manager at BAM FM.
This year’s awards were sponsored by many of the more established companies in the sector, notably Mitie Facilities Management. One of the largest FM companies in the UK, Mitie has been operating here in Ireland for over 10 years.
“We’re delighted to be sponsoring this year’s Facilities Management Awards. It is a great opportunity to celebrate the successes of our sector, the brilliant teams and amazing people that work in it. The nominations give a snapshot of the many wonderful initiatives being delivered, there is lots to be proud of,” said Les Sheridan, managing director (Ireland), Mitie Facilities Management.

ISS Facility Services also sponsored the awards that recognise industry leaders. “We’re very happy to be sponsoring this year’s awards. It is a great chance for all the people who work so hard in the industry to get some recognition. And the awards night itself is always great fun to attend," said Sean McAuliffe, director of operations of ISS Facility Services.
Everyone on the judging panel made a point of saying how impressed they had been by the quality and scope of the submissions.
“All of us on the judging panel were extremely impressed with the high quality of entries this year, and those who were shortlisted demonstrated a leap forward in innovation towards their approach to work. Singling out each of the individual winners was a real challenge for us. Albeit a very rewarding one but there were some real deserving winners on the night,” noted John Cunniffe, estate manager for The Bar of Ireland and judge on this year's panel.
