Andy McBrine missed out on a maiden Test century for Ireland on the first day of their one-off Test against Zimbabwe.
McBrine was left stranded on 90 not out as the tourists were dismissed for 260 inside 57 overs in Bulawayo.
Barry McCarthy managed to claim one scalp before the close but Zimbabwe reached stumps on 72 for one, 188 runs behind.
Andy Balbirnie’s decision to bat after he won the toss badly backfired as Ireland were reduced to 31 for five in the ninth over.
Blessing Muzarabani did the majority of the early damage on his way to fine figures of seven for 58, but McBrine rallied with Mark Adair in a 127-run partnership for the seventh wicket.
Adair was caught on 78 and despite some more lusty blows by McBrine, he was 10 short of a hundred when the Irish innings was concluded.
