The Antrim county board has imposed severe penalties on the Cargin and St Paul's clubs by banning both from all adult activity until 2002. This action has been taken after the brawl at the end of last month's county football final, writes Sean Moran.

The scenes which ensued at Casement Park were widely criticised by spectators and officials alike. Neither club will be permitted to play at senior, reserve or under-21 level next season with both banned from league and championship. The clubs have also been fined £1,000 each.

Cargin have also been stripped of their county title and will not represent Antrim in the Ulster club championship this month. Derry champions Bellaghy will now receive a bye to the semi-final. The matter of suspensions or reprimands for individual players has yet to be ratified by the county.

County manager Brian White now faces a National Football League campaign with most of his principal players left without club activity.
