THERE was plenty of cheering at St. Mel's Park last night. Not only did Athlone secure a new manager, the side also gained a crucial lead in their two-legged semi-final clash with Galway.

Terry Eviston was announced as the new manager of Athlone just before kick-off. It is understood that Eviston will be signing a two-year deal. He watched his new charges get the better of Galway in a very bruising encounter which saw several bookings for players of both teams.

The all important goal for Athlone came in the 60th minute when Adrian Carberry slotted the ball home past the diving Eddie Van Boxtel. The home side had to survive a late rally by Galway to hold on to their lead which they will take to Teryland Park tomorrow.
