UEFA SUPER CUP SEMI FINAL INTER MILAN v ATLETICO MADRID -Monaco, tonight, 7.45pm Live on RTÉ Two: Sky Sports 1: INTER MILAN coach Rafa Benitez has responded to Liverpool's claims that he had agreed not to poach players from Anfield by insisting he is not responsible for signing players for the Italian club.
Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has said Benitez would be reneging on an agreement not to raid Anfield for players if he pursued Dutch forward Dirk Kuyt.
But Benitez, speaking in Monaco ahead of tonight’s Super Cup clash, ducked questions about any agreement.
“I am the coach and I cannot sign players – that is for the technical director and the chairman,” said the Spaniard.
Inter Milan will tonight attempt to cap a record-breaking few months by claiming their maiden Super Cup crown. Under the guidance of Jose Mourinho last season, they became the first Italian team to win the treble of Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia titles.
Now the Nerazzurri will be looking to add the Super Cup to their list of accolades when they face Europa League winners Atletico in Monaco, although Javier Zanetti knows they will need to have their wits about them – especially with regards the Rojiblancos’ prolific strikeforce of Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan.
“We are here to win, but with respect for a strong opponent,” said the 37-year-old.
