Forget about national, or in the case of the European constituents, continental loyalty, as the bookmakers have received a lot of serious single bets on the USA to win the Ryder Cup at 4 to 7. This includes a couple of five-figure bets and there seems little doubt that it is the Americans that will prevail at The Belfry.
Many of those who believe the USA will win do so because of their superior ability in the singles, if the prices for leadership after day one and day two respectively demonstrate market trends. Good value to be their team's top scorer are Scott Verplank (16 to 1) and Mark Calcavecchia (18 to 1), who is widely tipped to team up with Tiger Woods.
On the European team, Sweden's Niclas Fasth (14 to 1) could make a big debut and Colin Montgomerie (8 to 1) is not a man to lie down.
