Fitzgibbon Cup Final/Limerick IT 2-16 NUI Galway 0-13:Teenage Galway hurling sensation Joe Canning scored 1-8 as Limerick IT carried too much firepower for NUI Galway at Dr Cullen Park on Saturday, deservedly winning their second Fitzgibbon Cup hurling title. There was an irony in the fact two Galwegians - Aonghus Callanan and Canning - grabbed the goals which undermined NUI Galway.

After seven minutes Callanan crashed the ball to the net - he later turned provider for Canning. That early goal was the start the 2005 champions needed and they remained ahead throughout the remainder of the game. With the score 1-5 to 0-5 in Limerick IT's favour in first-half injury-time there was drama at both ends of the field.

First Limerick IT were awarded a penalty. Canning's effort was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper David Woods. Two minutes later James Skehill, the LIT goalkeeper, crash-tackled NUI's David Kenny and was lucky to only see a yellow card brandished. Tipperary's Dara Egan took the penalty but fellow countyman Shane McGrath made an outstanding goal-line save.

Limerick IT put this final beyond NUI two minutes into the second half when Callanan set up Canning for a simple goal.
