It was close, but no cigar for lady captain Breda Murphy at Woodenbridge last week, as she barely missed out winning the weekly singles competition. The 16-handicapper shot a highly creditable nett score of 70, but it was just shy of claiming the first prize, which went to 20 handicapper Hazel McDonnell, whose 69 finished top. Another 20handicapper Maura Crummy was third, while the gross prize went to Elizabeth Byrne (7) with 83.

There was a similar story in Seapoint, where 19handicapper Rita McGuinness, the Termonfeckin club's lady captain, claimed third place with her 32 points total, which left her two points behind her own daughter, second placed Judy, who plays off 36. However, the two members of the McGuinness family, despite their good scores, weren't able to beat Eilish Flood (20) who claimed first prize with a total of 36 points.
