Athenry ... 4-15 Seán Treacy's, London ... 0-5: While the sending off of key forward Mick O'Hara in the second minute for a foul on midfielder Michael J Quinn did not help the Sean Treacy's cause in this All-Ireland hurling club quarter-final his continued presence would hardly have altered the end result.
The game was as good as over after 20 minutes at Ruislip with Athenry already ahead by 4-5 to 0-3. The match was a personal triumph for full forward Eugene Cloonan, scorer of all but five points of his side's total.
Displaying superior team work and fitness Athenry dominated in all areas and especially in the middle of the field, where Michael J Quinn and Brian Hanley were well on top. Joe Rabbitte and Shane Donoghue provided much of the groundwork with their clever use of the ball.
