Steve Collins could be back in the ring in September - but his opponent is likely to be Joe Calzaghe and not American Roy Jones as he had hoped.
Promoter Frank Warren is keen to arrange the fight after Calzaghe has fought a mandatory defence against either Glenn Catley or Richie Woodhall on June 5th.
Warren said: "We think we can bypass that and get the mandatory out of the way. Provided Joe comes through okay, we've been in discussions with the former holder of the title, Steve Collins, and we hope to set up a fight in the autumn."
The idea is that a Calzaghe-Collins showdown would take place in September in the open air against the backdrop of Cardiff Castle.
Collins, who retired two years ago, made an unsuccessful attempt to arrange a fight against WBC and WBA light-heavyweight champion Roy Jones in the US earlier this year.
