All-Ireland Cup / Shannon 17 Cork Constitution 20: A penalty try in stoppage time gave Cork Constitution victory over Shannon in the All-Ireland Cup match at Thomond Park yesterday.

It was a victory Constitution fully deserved and was the result of a tremendous performance by their forwards, superbly led by number eight Frank Cogan.

Constitution led 13-3 at half-time after a fine try by scrumhalf Frank Murphy and two penalties and a conversion by outhalf Darragh Lyons against a penalty for Shannon by David Delaney.

Shannon hit back early in the second half with two more penalties by Delaney and looked to be taking control when Constitution suffered a double blow in the 67th minute.

Prop Mike Ross was shown a yellow card for a professional foul and almost immediately veteran Eddie Halvey forced his way over for an unconverted Shannon try.

Shannon stretched the lead to 17-13 with another Delaney penalty but Con showed commendable resolution in fighting back and were correctly awarded a penalty try for an infringement at a scrum in the dying moments. Lyons converted to see them into the quarter-finals.
