Cork 1-10 Cork IT 0-11:Holders Cork pulled away in the second half to repeat last season's McGrath Cup win over Cork IT at their grounds yesterday and earn a home quarter-final against Tipperary.
Cork started with a handful of regulars and led by 0-8 to 0-5 at the interval after playing with the wind as the students kept in touch.
But the introduction of another trio of established players for Cork at half-time had the desired effect, especially Donncha O’Connor, who pounced for the only goal in the 40th minute.
It came from a short kick-out by goalkeeper Andrew O’Donoghue which was intercepted by Liam Shorten, who sent O’Connor clear to finish well with a low shot to the net.
That put Cork 1-10 to 0-6 in front and while Cork IT replied with points from Donough Leahy and Donal Óg Hodnett, Cork hit back with five unanswered points in quick succession to sweep 1-15 to 0-8 in front after 55 minutes. Cork didn’t score again and finished with 14 men after Paul Kerrigan was sent off for a second yellow.
