MUNSTER IHC FINAL:CORK'S SECOND-HALF dominance ensured victory in the Munster intermediate hurling final at Páirc Uí Chaoimh last night.

When Waterford’s Patrick Hurney found the net in the 37th minute, it reduced Cork’s lead to five points (2-12 to 2-7), but the hosts replied promptly with a goal from Maurice O’Sullivan and never looked back.

Although two Stephen Moylan points in quick succession had Cork 0-6 to 0-4 ahead by the 17th minute, Waterford gained parity by the 22nd minute, when the sides were level for the fifth time in the half.

However, a quick burst from Cork yielded 2-3, the goals coming from Leigh Desmond and Mark O’Sullivan, and the home side looked to be firmly in control with half-time approaching until Pa Kearney picked out Jamie Kearney and he finished coolly.

Farrell’s late point made it 2-11 to 1-7 at the break.

Had Waterford been able to hold out after Hurney’s goal brought them back into contention seven minutes into the second half, things might have turned out differently, but as it was Cork showed their class in pulling away.

Desmond remained accurate from frees, finishing with 1-7, while Moylan took his points tally to five.

Maurice O’Sullivan and Lorcan McLoughlin also found the net, with a David Howard goal all Waterford could muster as Cork ran out 21-point winners.
