Snooker: Ken Doherty extended his unbeaten run in ranking tournaments to 12 matches with a 5-3 success over fellow Irishman Michael Judge at the £441,000 Regal Scottish Open in Aberdeen.
Judge knocked in a break of 123 on his way to a 3-0 advantage, but Doherty won the next five frames without reply including a break of 87 in frame five and two close finishes in frames seven and eight.
Welshman Matthew Stevens had earlier became the first player to reach the quarterfinals. Last season's world championship runner-up beat Anthony Hamilton 5-0.
International Rules: The Irish Under-17 International Rules team suffered a 7049 defeat to Australia in the first of three tour tests. Played as an AFL curtain-raiser in the Melbourne Cricket Grounds in front of 80,000 people, the Irish team led 46-39 but faded badly in the final quarter due to a combination of injury and exhaustion.
A stunning goal by Galway's Michael Meehan was the highlight prior to that, but a number of injuries weakened the Irish side and Iomar Barrett (Galway) and David Gordon (Mayo) are already ruled out of Monday's second test.
Irish scorers: R Convery (Derry) 20; M Meehan (Galway) 8; P Mulvihill (Westmeath) 6; J Sheridan (Meath), P Young (Derry), M McKeever (Cavan), D O'Mahony (Dublin), G O'Grady (Wexford) 3 each.
