National League Premier Division/Longford Town - 1 Cork City - 2: Cork City moved to within striking distance of league leaders Shelbourne with this victory over FAI Cup finalists Longford Town at Flancare Park last night.

Longford are on a dreadful run - they haven't won a game since their semi-final victory over Drogheda United.

It never looked likely that they would win last night either as they fell behind after just four minutes. The combination of Liam Kearney and Kevin Doyle was to prove an effective one for City as Kearney provided the cross that was eventually bundled home by Doyle.

Shane Barrett, Eric Lavine and Philip Keogh all went close for the home side before Kearney and Doyle combined again to double Cork's lead.

Again it was Doyle who headed past stand-in goalkeeper Mick Dempsey to effectively end the contest after just 27 minutes.

Longford did grab a late consolation when Dessie Baker headed home a Shane Barrett cross in injury-time.
