Drogheda United have been refused permission to register 30-year-old former Finnish international goalkeeper Jani Viander ahead of Tuesday's Setanta Cup semi-final at Windsor Park.

With Dan Connor suspended and the club's only other goalkeeper, Charlie Treacy, carrying a groin strain, manager Paul Doolin had hoped the competition's organising committee would make an exception to the rules with regard to registrations.

"I could still sign Jani for the league and we'll make a call on that over the next while but it would have been good to have him available to us next week," said Doolin yesterday. "It's no great surprise they've said no . . . we'll just have to hope Charlie gets through the game without problems because I think the only other person at the club who has even played in goals is Shane Robinson."

Shelbourne, meanwhile, have been fined €5,000 (€3,000 of it suspended) over incidents connected with the television coverage of Setanta Cup games at Tolka Park in recent weeks.
