Dublin have included two championship debutants in their line-up to face Kildare in the Leinster Championship quarter-final at Croke Park on Sunday. Davey Byrne lines out in goal while Brian Barnes starts at left-corner back.
Byrne, from the Ballymun Kickhams club, played in goal throughout this season's league campaign but a recent injury led to John O'Leary coming out of retirement. There was some speculation that O'Leary, a current selector, might return to the starting line-up, but manager Tom Carr obviously is confident that Byrne has made a full recovery. It is the first time Dublin have named a different goalkeeper than O'Leary for a championship match since 1982. O'Leary's name may yet appear in the list of substitutes, which is yet to be named.
Barnes wins his place in the full back line after impressive performances in recent challenge matches. Carr and his selectors are believed to have been particularly impressed with the St Sylvester's man's handling of Maurice Fitzgerald in the recent challenge with All-Ireland champions Kerry.
Paddy Christie, returning after a ligament injury, lines out at full back, with Paddy Moran in the right corner. Keith Barr, who Dublin experimented with at full back in recent times, plays in his customary centre back position. He is flanked by Ian Roberston and Paul Curran. Robertson was centre back for much of the season.
In a minor surprise, Brian Stynes returns to partner Paul Bealin at midfield. Stynes was employed at wing forward for much of the season, with Ciaran Walsh at centre-field. For Sunday their roles have been reversed.
Dessie Farrell has recovered from a groin strain injury to take his place at centre forward. Ian Robertson, expecting to be given a roving brief, fills the remaining position in the half forward line.
Declan Darcy plays his first championship match with Dublin at full forward. The former Leitrim centre back and centre forward is flanked by Jim Gavin and Jason Sherlock in the corners.
Laois have made a very interesting selection for their clash with Westmeath at Croke Park. They have included no fewer than five of the minor team which won the All-Ireland championship in 1996.
The five are Colm Parkinson (left half back), Noel Garvan (midfield) and forwards Kevin Fitzpatrick, Stephen Kelly and Chris Conway.
Kelly was also a member of last year's Laois minor team which won the county a second successive All-Ireland title.
Much interest will centre on the performance of Ian Fitzgerald, who has been named at centre half forward. Fitzgerald was just beyond the age limit for the two successful minor teams, but has been one of the most influential performers for the senior team in recent seasons.
However, he disappointed for the Laois under-21 team in this season's All-Ireland under-21 football final, and may be out to prove his true worth.
Laois have made a very interesting selection for their quarter-final clash with Westmeath, also at Croke Park. They have included no fewer than five of their minor team which won the All-Ireland championship in 1996. The five are Colm Parkinson (left half back), Noel Garvan (midfield) and attackers, Kevin Fitzpatrick, Stephen Kelly and Chris Conway.
Westmeath have made only one change from their side which beat Longford last time out. Tom Cleary comes in at right corner forward for John Deehan who is injured.
Waterford have selected the team which started in their Munster championship first round victory over Kerry for their semi-final clash with Tipperary at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
This means that Brian Flannery, who won an under-21 medal with Tipperary but who is now domiciled in Waterford, will occupy the left corner back position. Billy O'Sullivan and Dave Bennett, both of whom were substituted in the Kerry match, are back in the starting line-out.
Waterford have had a very steady side in action in the run-up to this match. Even though beaten by Cork in the National League there is only one change since that match, with Flannery coming in for Mark O'Sullivan at left corner back. There was some speculation in the county that Sean Daly, recently returned to the squad, might win a place at full forward.
The Cavan county board staged a special press night at Breffni Park last night and then announced that their team to play Fermanagh in the Ulster Championship first round would not be released to the press until tonight.
