Dunlop continues to amaze

Joey Dunlop will never cease to amaze his loyal followers

Joey Dunlop will never cease to amaze his loyal followers. At the Skerries Road Races on Saturday, he took two fantastic wins despite the frantic efforts of a hungry pack of top riders who must be constantly frustrated by the efforts of the legend who is old enough to be their father.

The nine lap grand final was one of the most exciting road races seen at the three-mile circuit in many years. Dunlop led for the first three laps, but by lap five had fallen back to third.

However, by lap seven Joey was back in front and he won by a huge six second margin from Adrian Archibald.

If we were to believe that the battle was hard-fought, and that age was finally catching up with 47-year-old Dunlop, we were soon to be proved wrong. "I had to take it easy because the clutch was slipping." said Dunlop.

Archibald had a stunning victory in the 600 cc race. He led from start to finish, and despite building a comfortable lead, he never eased off pace.

Armagh's Garry Dynes also had a good day. He won the first 125 race by a margin of only a quarter of a second from Darren Lindsay, and the 250 race by 0.3 of a second from Denis McCullough.
