Irish Times/Allianz Golf Masters: Some managers spend ages agonising over their initial selections and their team names but the case of Caroline Daly shows the casual approach can pay dividends.
Just two minutes before the registration deadline and after several efforts in which she exceeded the a12.5 million budget, Daly managed to get a team entered. She had no time to think of a name, lost her PIN and can't have hoped for much more than winning a10 in a side bet with her father for the better-performing team.
To dip under the budget she threw in a player she described as a complete waste, namely David Duval. "Part of me thought I'd give him another chance and fortunately I did," admitted Daly, who can look forward to a fourball at Druids Heath as our week-11 winner. Duval's second-round 68 equalled the best of the week at Winged Foot and his tied-16th finish was his best on the PGA Tour since the Deutsche Bank Championship over two years ago.
Daly was one of 290 managers to employ Geoff Ogilvy from the outset (the figure is now down to 257 but likely to rise again), and her other scorers at Winged Foot were Padraig Harrington (fifth) and Arron Oberholser (tied 16th). The double money on offer gave Daly a total of a398,000, which was a10,000 more than runner-up Arthur Fitzharris. Reacquainted with her PIN and up to 293rd overall, she can set about using her 10 transfers to make further progress up the main leaderboard.
There is regular money this week for the Johnnie Walker Championship and the Booz Allen Classic.
