Ebdon, the world number three was in solid form as he administered a 5-0 hammering to John Parrott to remain on course for the £40,000 first prize.

Ebdon explained his new positive approach was the result of a chance meeting with a fan who felt he was playing too slowly.

"Someone stopped me in the street the other day and told me a certain player was putting the game back 20 years - then he said you're going the same way," revealed Ebdon, who has made a conscious decision to be less ponderous around the table.

"I was always a naturally attacking player in my amateur days and have decided to revert to that strategy. I am not playing quite at my best but at least I am enjoying myself again, which is a big bonus."
