End of an era for Rangers

Walter Smith and some of his most famous players will appear at Ibrox for the last time today. Rangers' final home league match of the season, against Kilmarnock, will be a poignant occasion for the outgoing manager as well as the likes of Richard Gough, Stuart McCall, Brian Laudrup, Alex Cleland, Andy Goram and Ally McCoist.

Of the six, only McCall will be under contract when the season ends, though he is likely to leave with the rest as part of a clear-out by Smith's successor, Dick Advocaat.

There is little time for contemplation, however, as Rangers can still win their 10th successive championship. Anything other than victory over Kilmarnock, though, will probably end their hopes.

With two matches remaining they are one point behind Celtic, who face Dunfermline at East End Park tomorrow. Kilmarnock, fourth in the Premier Division and chasing a place in the UEFA Cup, will be powerfully motivated.

"I think those of us who are facing our last game at Ibrox will feel a bit of regret," said Smith, "but it's secondary to the match itself. We have to keep winning if we are to maintain some pressure on Celtic.

"Outside the three teams (Hearts are the third) who have been contesting the title, Kilmarnock have shown themselves to be the best. They are well organised and have given us problems this season."

Smith is without Jonas Thern in midfield and Craig Moore in defence, both injured, but the Italian defender Lorenzo Amoruso returns after a one-match ban.

Celtic's Wim Jansen has an injury-free squad of 19 from whom to choose for Dunfermline. The Dutchman is likely to play Jackie McNamara - a substitute in last week's damaging draw with Hibernian - from the start.

Jansen dismissed suggestions that tension might sabotage his players' prospects of their first championship in 10 years. "It's no different from what it was six weeks ago or last week," he said. "They all know if they win the last two games they win the league.

"There's pressure in every game but it's no different for us than it is for any other team."

Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt have become the latest Manchester United players to commit their long-term futures to the club after they signed new contracts. The England midfield duo have both agreed seven-year deals.
